New ways to make friends while traveling
We hear a lot about companies trying to help you get vacation tips from friends. But a few companies are going a step further. They're trying to help you travel with acquaintances and like-minded strangers. Here are some new ones of note

Globetrooper Helps you connect with like-minded people (usually complete strangers) to plan experiences abroad. About 1,400 people, mostly Aussies, have "liked" the year-old service on Facebook so far.
Vacation Relation This is for Spring Breakers only. Teaming up with StudentCity shortly, this site will let young people find out if their far-flung friends are going to be at a warm-weather destination at the same time as they are.
Travel with Spirit Want to do some faith-based traveling with a fellow Christian? Post an ad in the forums of this site, which also spotlights nifty package trips and suggests destination ideas.
Rent a Friend Yes, it's come to this. People in cities around the world offer their time on an hourly basis to accompany you to attractions, etc. A $20 an hour rate is common
Crash Boom Bang
The very first step is that you have to have a motorbike. Otherwise none of this will matter and you’ll just have to hope that your tuk tuk driver is drunk, because otherwise the whole crashing thing isn’t going to happen for you.
We rented a motorbike here in Chiang Mai. It’s $50/mo, costs about $3 to fill up and fits a family of three just perfectly. You know that post about getting rid of the car seat in Bangkok, well let’s just say we’ve embraced local modes of transportation even more. There’s a complicated system I use to justify this to myself but here are the highlights: Thais drive with their children all the time (usually just standing on their lap, hair blowing in the breeze), most of them don’t use helmets, we only drive in town where the speeds rarely go above 15 mph and because everyone is too poor to have insurance or replace their vehicle, everyone drives very nicely (once you account for the complete lack of traffic rules).
So my husband drives, I put the baby in a wrap with a baby helmet (the store owner laughed at me when I tried to buy a helmet for him, assuming I was just kidding) and I hop on the back. It’s a baby sandwich. Hubby, Baby, Me.
There are two reactions we get as we zip around town. The first is from Thais who invariably notice the baby and lean off the edge of their bike, stretch out one hand (steering their bike with the other) and try to touch his hand or foot. If they are driving with a baby, they usually shake their baby at me, smiling and try to make the two children touch hands. All of this while we’re driving down the street, avoiding potholes and for the Thais, usually carrying some large package on the front of their bike.
The second reaction is from foreigners. Usually they drop their jaw, nudge the person next to them, and on a few occasions, whip out their video camera – because apparently there’s a big demand for videos of bad parents on YouTube.
Cities in Winter
Cities are not really that much fun in the winter. Winter is meant to be enjoyed in the mountains, in warm rustic cabins or, for those who are averse to the cold, on the beach in the Caribbean. Other than some quaint holiday decorations, cities are pretty devoid of winter perks. Snow turns black pretty quickly, slush makes walking around difficult and buildings create wind tunnels. All in all, winter in cities kind of sucks.

Beware of Holiday Scams
Consumers would be wise to beware of the most common scams of the season before heading online to book travel and do holiday shopping. McAfee (NYSE: MFE) has revealed the “Twelve Scams of Christmas” – the 12 most dangerous online scams that computer users should be cautious of this holiday season.
“Scams continue to be big business for cybercriminals who have their sights set on capitalizing on open hearts and wallets this holiday season,” said Dave Marcus, director of security research for McAfee Labs. “As people jump online to look for deals on gifts and travel, it’s important to recognize common scams to safeguard against theft during the busy season ahead.”

Can near-death experiences really exist?
The idea that some form of consciousness may survive death has been lent credence by reports of near-death experiences (NDEs). People who have been clinically dead and been revived have described what occurred while they were dead. Science has sometimes sought to explain these experiences. A Dutch study of 344 patients who were revived following death from cardiac arrest found that 18 percent had near-death experiences. Interestingly, most of these experiences could be categorized into common themes like an awareness of being dead, positive emotions and the presence of boundaries the individual couldn't pass

Can science be rectified with religion?
Schools of thought differ on whether science and religion can peacefully co-exist in both the mind of a person and within the larger society. One school of thought suggests that the beliefs associated with both science and religion are too fundamentally at odds with one another to co-exist. This idea is based on the 19th-century "conflict thesis." You could find more examples of harmony between religion and science within the individual. A 1996 poll found that 40 percent of working scientists believed in a Biblical-type omniscient God. This underscores the other school of thought that allows the reconciliation of the two institutions; that the Big Bang created the universe, but a creator God gave rise to the Big Bang.
Can prayer heal?
The idea that the prayers of one person can help another individual is common among world religions. This type of prayer is called intercessory prayer because one person intercedes on another's behalf to a higher power. In 1988, San Francisco physician Randolph Byrd conducted a scientific experiment of 393 patients admitted to a hospital for cardiac treatment. Byrd enlisted groups of religious people who'd never met the patients to pray for these individuals' swift and uncomplicated recovery. He divided the patients into groups who were prayed for and those who weren't. Byrd found that 85 percent of those who received intercessory prayer had speedy recoveries, compared to 73 percent among the group who didn't receive prayer. Replications of Byrd's study have found mixed results.

Iconic" Diana dress fetches $276,000 at auction
The dress, which auctioneer Kerry Taylor described as "iconic," had been expected to sell for 30-50,000 pounds.
It was part of a collection of clothes being sold by designers Elizabeth Emanuel and David Emanuel and was bought by fashion museum the Fundacion Museo De La Moda in Chile.
The dress provoked some outrage at that time for its deep neckline. When Diana bent forward as she emerged out of her car at the Royal Opera House, the photographers went into a frenzy, making Prince Charles to remark: "Have all the fashion writers finished?"
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final adventure in the Harry Potter film series, is a much-anticipated motion picture event to be told in two full-length parts.
Part 1 begins as Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort's immortality and destruction--the Horcruxes. On their own, without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. But there are Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart.
Meanwhile, the wizarding world has become a dangerous place for all enemies of the Dark Lord. The long-feared war has begun and Voldemort's Death Eaters seize control of the Ministry of Magic and even Hogwarts, terrorizing and arresting anyone who might oppose them. But the one prize they still seek is the one most valuable to Voldemort: Harry Potter. The Chosen One has become the hunted one as the Death Eaters search for Harry with orders to bring him to Voldemort...alive.
Harry's only hope is to find the Horcruxes before Voldemort finds him. But as he searches for clues, he uncovers an old and almost forgotten tale--the legend of the Deathly Hallows. And if the legend turns out to be true, it could give Voldemort the ultimate power he seeks.
Little does Harry know that his future has already been decided by his past when, on that fateful day, he became "the Boy Who Lived." No longer just a boy, Harry Potter is drawing ever closer to the task for which he has been preparing since the day he first stepped into Hogwarts: the ultimate battle with Voldemort.
'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1' will be released in India on November 19.

This week astronomers announced the discovery of the youngest black hole yet spotted—the light we're seeing today came from the black hole when the object was about 30 years old. The find is giving scientists a first glimpse into the early development of these cosmic predators.
